Hi, what does the evaluation state “SoftRebootPending” under “software updates” mean in remote software center. I figured it meant that a reboot was required, however if I open “System information”, the status of “pending Restart” is False. Does this mean it does need a restart however neither Windows or MCM is prompting the user to restart so it’s just a waiting game for when the user next chooses to restart? For our M365 apps update we have around 25% of our devices with this status.
Hello!
Thank you for contacting the Recast Software Support Team, I’d be happy to assist. “SoftRebootPending” is the exit code that update returned the last time it tried running. In SCCM terms, Soft reboots usually mean other apps and updates can still be run and a reboot wont be forced. Most likely, those clients had one or more MS Office applications open at the time the update was ran, so the update returned “soft reboot required.”
M365 updates work a little different than regular Windows updates; here’s a Microsoft post with elaboration: Manage Microsoft 365 Apps updates - Configuration Manager | Microsoft Learn
There are ways, in SCCM, to show the native M365 prompts to the user when an update is pending to nudge them into closing and reopening the MS Office apps: Client settings - Configuration Manager | Microsoft Learn
